RENO, Nev. — Bill Amis wasn't interested in any of his statistics yesterday after the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team lost to Nevada, 88-68.
"Individual (numbers) really doesn't matter," the forward said. "We lost."
Still, Amis tied career-highs with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots while filling in for injured starter P.J. Owsley. Because of Hawai'i's limited personnel, Amis played a season-high 37 minutes.
"I thought Bill did some good things," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "But this is a team sport."
Amis opened the game by getting two of his shot attempts blocked by Nevada's 7-foot center JaVale McGee. But later in the first half, Amis was able to throw down two slam dunks. In the second half, he even blocked one of McGee's shots.
"McGee still got 20 points, so I can't say I did a great job tonight, to be honest," Amis said. "It's a learning experience."
GIBSON REACHES 1,000
Senior point guard Matt Gibson became the 13th player in Hawai'i men's basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career during yesterday's game.
After scoring a team-high 23 yesterday, Gibson now has 1,007 points as a Rainbow Warrior.
"Was that tonight?" he said. "I didn't even know. Right now, it doesn't mean much with a 20-point loss. But good job by me, I guess. I'm sure it's one of those things I'll look back on later."
His 1,000th point came on a free throw in the second half. Earlier, he threw down a rare — for him — one-handed dunk.
With at least eight games remaining, Gibson could finish his career among UH's all-time top 10 for points. He is already No. 6 in career steals with 129, and No. 10 in assists with 283.
'BOWS BACK AT HOME
The team was scheduled to depart Reno early this morning. The 'Bows will host first-place Utah State on Saturday.
