Fire destroys Waimanalo home; no injuries reported

Advertiser Staff

A fire that broke out around midnight this morning destroyed a home on Waikupanaha Street in Waimanalo.

Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said that approximately 40 firefighters from seven fire companies turned out to battle the two-alarm blaze.

Seelig said the fire completely destroyed a Quonset hut estimated to be about 60 years old.

A man in his 50s, who lived in the building, was awakened by noises coming from the kitchen area and found a fire burning that he could not control, Seelig said

The first fire company was sent out on the call at 12:07 a.m. and the blaze was deemed under control at 12:40 a.m.

Firefighters will wait until after dawn to finish hosing down the burning remains of the structure before it can be declared fully extinguished, Seelig said.

Preliminary damage estimates were set at $150,000 for the structure and $20,000 for the contents.

No injuries resulted from the fire and the Red Cross was called to assist the lone resident.
