Hawaii-Hilo sweeps doubleheader from Kansas

Hawai'i-Hilo scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 12-4 victory over Kansas yesterday in the second game of a baseball doubleheader sweep at Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona.
The Vulcans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the first game, 4-3.
UH-Hilo improved to 3-3, while Kansas dropped to 1-2.
In the first game, Ronel Trias went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs. Joe Davis allowed four runs and seven hits, striking out eight and walking two in seven innings to earn the victory.
With the first game tied at 3 after the scheduled seven innings, Keoni Manago singled with one out and went to second on a single by Cade Uyetake. Shane Kessel reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Manago to score the winning run. Dustin Gilmore pitched two shutout innings to earn the victory.
SOFTBALL
UH BEATS MICHIGAN ST.
The No. 14 University of Hawai'i softball team split two games at the Palm Springs Classic at Cathedral City, Calif.
Courtney Baughman spaced six hits in a complete-game performance in a 6-1 victory over Michigan State.
Baughman struck out three and walked two against Michigan State. Clare Warwick, Brandi Peiler and Richie-Anne Titcomb each had two hits for the Rainbow Wahine.
In the second game, Donna Kerr pitched a one-hitter to lead UCLA to a 3-0 victory over the Rainbow Wahine (7-2).
Kerr struck out eight and walked none. Warwick got UH's only hit, a single in the fourth.
GOLF
KONO TRAILS MASON
Professional Nick Mason shot an 8-under-par 63 yesterday to take a five-shot lead over Kevin Hayashi and Stephanie Kono after the first round of the Hilo Invitational Pro-Am & Golf Tournament at Hilo Muni.
Mason won the tournament in 2004.
Kono, a Punahou senior, is the top amateur. Amateur Henry Park and professional Jacob Low shot 69s.
The tournament ends today.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
'BOWS THIRD IN WAC
Swimmer Emma Berry and diver Stephanie De Lima won events yesterday as the University of Hawai'i women finished third at the Western Athletic Conference Championship in San Antonio.
Berry won her third individual gold medal, winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16 minutes, 59.44 seconds. Northern Arizona's Becky Triemstra was second in 17:03.76.
De Lima won the platform diving with an NCAA automatic qualifying score of 265.90. Nevada's Chelsea Sawyer and Hawai'i's Raquel Bartlow tied for second with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 240.75 points.
UH diving coach Mike Brown and Nikki Huffman of Northern Arizona shared Co- Diving Coach of the Year honors.
Nevada won the meet with 725.5 points, followed by Northern Arizona with 605. Hawai'i had 574.5 points.
WATER POLO
UH FALLS IN QUARTERFINAL
Fifth-ranked California defeated No. 4 Hawai'i, 11-9, in overtime yesterday in the quarterfinals of the UC Irvine Women's Water Polo Invitational at Newport Beach, Calif.
Grace Reynolds and Paige Lorenz scored in overtime for California. The Rainbow Wahine (7-3) will face Loyola Marymount today in the consolation bracket.
Freshman Carmen Eggens led UH with four goals. Lisa van Raalte scored three goals and Carmen Eggens and Leoni Van Der Molen each added two in the Rainbow Wahine's 10-6 victory over No. 12 Long Beach State.
SURFING
3 ADVANCE IN AUSTRALIA
Hawai'i surfers Megan Abubo, Melanie Bartels and Carissa Moore advanced to the third round of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast women's contest yesterday.
The first two rounds were run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Duranbah Beach, Coolangatta, Australia.
Abubo and Bartels won their respective first-round heats to advance directly to the third round.
Abubo was one of the standouts of the first round, receiving a two-wave total of 13.83, including a near-perfect single wave of 8.83 (out of 10).
Moore, a sophomore at Punahou School, placed second in her first-round heat, and also advanced directly to the third round.
Moore is scheduled to face defending world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia in a one-on-one third round heat. Moore qualified for the contest through the trials heats, and is the only amateur surfer in the field.
