What are you most proud of? "Implementing the middle school philosophy that includes two teams per grade level who are able to meet every other day for team planning, a block schedule that allows for four periods a day including advisory," said Donna Whitford, Lokelani Intermediate School principal. "This is a very flexible schedule and can be used in a variety of ways to personalize instruction for each student."
What is your biggest challenge? "It continues to be meeting the benchmarks for Hawai'i State Assessment testing," Whitford said. "When the corrected HSA scores were issued, Lokelani had met benchmarks for all subgroups, except special education."
Special events: Participates in the Maui District Spelling Bee, Computer Club, the Hula and Hawaiian Culture Club, the annual Fair Games, participation in the Save our Shores effort to maintain trails and clean up the community
History: The school opened in 1989 and serves sixth- through eighth-graders in the Kihei-Wailea area. The school's mission is to make a community of lifelong learners who work together in an environment that fosters academic excellence.
