LIHU'E
Combat vets can claim real property tax credit

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i County will begin providing a real property tax credit for qualified combat veterans and a future tax exemption for deployed active-duty military personnel.

Any honorably discharged veteran with proof of service in a combat zone or hazardous duty area, or a surviving spouse of a qualified veteran, is eligible for a one-time, maximum $1,500 real property tax credit on his or her primary residence for the 2008 tax year, July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, exclusive of the minimum tax required by law.

To receive this tax credit, eligible veterans must file Claim Form P-8 with the real property assessment office by Feb. 1.

The form can be picked up at the assessment office located at the Lihu'e Civic Center, Kapule Building, suite A-454, or downloaded from the real property assessment Web site, www.kau aipropertytax.com.

Effective July 1, deployed active-duty military personnel who meet one of the following criteria will be eligible for a real property tax exemption on their primary residence:

  • Those serving in the U.S. armed forces in a combat zone or hazardous duty area.

  • Those serving in direct support of U.S. military operations outside the United States.

To apply for the exemption, qualified individuals must file Claim Form P-9 with the real property assessment office by June 30 of the tax year for which the exemption is claimed, starting with the 2009 tax year.

Anyone with questions may contact the assessment office at 808-241-6222.
