MA'ALAEA
Workshop offers advice on how to avoid whales
Advertiser Staff
A "Be Whale Aware" workshop will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow to help boaters and other ocean users avoid collisions with humpback whales.
The free public event will take place at the Pacific Whale Foundation's Discovery Center classrooms, downstairs at The Harbor Shops at Ma'alaea.
A 2006 study by the Pacific Whale Foundation conducted in Ma'alaea Bay found that boaters are certain to have at least one surprise encounter with a whale during every nine miles of travel in the seas between Kaho'olawe, Makena and Olowalu.
For more information or to obtain "Be Whale Aware" stickers or printed materials, call the foundation at 249-8811, ext. 1, or toll-free 800-942-5311; or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to "Be Whale Aware" Stickers, Pacific Whale Foundation, 300 Ma'alaea Road, Suite 211, Wailuku, HI 96793.
