Lahainaluna, Baldwin and King Kekaulike high schools on Maui will be getting almost $11 million in new construction using state funds, a news release said.

Gov. Linda Lingle said in a statementprojects include construction of a new cafeteria, telecommunications upgrades and the design of a new auditorium.

"To help our students succeed, we need to ensure that public school facilities statewide are keeping pace with population growth and technological advancements," the governor said in the statement. "These projects will provide necessary upgrades at three schools and improve the educational experience for thousands of high school students on Maui."

The following projects are planned:

  • Lahainaluna High School, Lahaina: $9.4 million for the design and construction of a new cafeteria at the school. The current cafeteria and kitchen facility are considerably undersized for the school's enrollment of more than 1,035 students, about 100 of whom board at the school and dine at the cafeteria three times a day, seven days a week, the release said.

The total project cost is estimated at $10.3 million, with $915,000 previously released for design in 2007. Design is scheduled to begin next month and be completed in January 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2009 and be completed in November 2010.

  • Baldwin High School, Wailuku: $860,000 will be used to upgrade the telecommunications system to accommodate educational technology requirements, including high-speed Internet access. The school's electrical infrastructure will also be improved to support these telecommunications upgrades.

The total project cost is estimated at $1.4 million, with $533,000 previously allotted in 2006. Design is scheduled to be completed in November. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2009 and be completed in December 2009.

  • King Kekaulike High School, Pukalani: $650,000 has been released to help fund the design of an auditorium at the school.

Currently, the school uses the cafeteria stage and student dining area to hold assemblies and student events, the release said. The new auditorium will be a stand-alone structure and help support the school's performing arts and music programs. Design is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in December.
