Traffic fatalities statewide fell in '07
Advertiser Staff
O'ahu had 22 fewer traffic deaths in 2007 than in 2006 to lead the way for a 15 percent drop in fatalities statewide, according to data compiled by The Advertiser.
There were 68 traffic fatalities on O'ahu last year, which includes the Dec. 2 death of 72-year-old Harold Ring, who died from a medical condition. Honolulu police will change the total to 67 when paperwork is received from the medical examiner.
The 2007 statewide total of 133 traffic fatalities is 24 fewer in 2006.
The 2007 breakdown by island:
O'ahu (70 deaths): 30 auto-related, 20 pedestrians, 15 motorcycle-related, three mopeds, two bicycle
Big Island (37 deaths): 29 auto-related, five motorcycle-related, three pedestrians.
Maui (21 deaths): 12 auto-related, five motorcycle-related, two bicyclists, two pedestrians. (The total will be reduced by one because the May 19 death of Kevin P. Curran, 42, of Missouri was determined to be a suicide.)
Kaua'i (seven deaths): Five auto-related, two motorcycle-related.
Correction: There were two bicycle fatalities on O'ahu in 2007, bringing the total number of traffic fatalities to 70. Data was incomplete in a previous version of this story.
