ILWU members aid hotel workers

Local members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are supporting a free store stocked with food to help workers who lost their jobs recently at The Pacific Beach Hotel.
Union spokeswoman Eadie Omonaka said the store operated through the Christmas holidays, opening on Dec. 21. and is available to those who kept their jobs but were affected by the recent management changes.
The store has collected a couple of truckloads of necessities, some from members, others from supporters — including other unions, some teachers, firefighters and other individuals.
Omonaka said the store has given out about half of what was donated. She said the union is still accepting donations weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ILWU Local 142 at 451 Atkinson Drive.
DONATION OFFSETS CARBON EMISSIONS
Green Sand Inc., a Honolulu-based architecture firm that specializes in sustainable design, said it had offset its carbon emissions with a donation through the www.Carbonfund.org's CarbonFree Small Business program.
The company said it had taken steps to reduce its carbon emissions and also made the donation, making it a carbon-negative company.
www.Carbonfund.org is a carbon reduction and offset organization dedicated to helping people and businesses reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.
REAL ESTATE SYMPOSIUM TOMORROW
CB Richard Ellis is holding its annual symposium for the retail real estate market tomorrow at the Halekulani Hotel.
Dene Oliver, a principal with San Diego-based developer OliverMcMillan will deliver the keynote speech titled, "Mixed Use — What You Need to Know."
Other speakers include: Paul Brewbaker, chief economist of the Bank of Hawaii; Roger Lyons, vice president of CB Richard Ellis; Paul Flores, vice president of Fidelity National Title; and Scott Gomes, executive vice president of CB Richard Ellis.
Brewbaker will speak about how economic conditions this year will affect consumer spending, while Lyons will lead a panel of regional real estate experts from Walgreens, Target and Office Depot.
LANDSCAPING STORE OPENS FRIDAY
Hawaii Irrigation Supply Co. will hold a grand opening celebration Friday for its new store in Wailuku.
The new location at 200 Waiheu Beach Road was opened to meet the growing demand on Maui for landscaping supplies and services, company officials said.
The Honolulu-based company opened its first store in 1972 in Mapunapuna. The company specializes in irrigation systems, outdoor lighting, fertilizers and sod.
SHERATON WAIKIKI HAS NEW EATERY
A new casual restaurant called Ingredients opened this month at the Sheraton Waikiki.
Counter-style service allows guests to choose between made-to-order meals or prepackaged food.
The menu offers a mix of breakfast specialties, salads, brick oven pizzas, gourmet and grilled sandwiches, soups, pastries, gelato, smoothies, Hawaiian tonics, coffee, tea, beer, wine and a variety of other drinks. Ingredients is open from 6 a.m. until midnight and breakfast is served until 10:30 a.m. Catering service is available.
