TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

State of the Union address, 4 p.m. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and cable news channels. In a year of politics and war the networks have been taking news a little more seriously. CNN starts its advance coverage at 3.

OF LOCAL NOTE

"The Augie Show," 10:30 p.m., MyNetwork TV. Following last week's hourlong parodies special, Augie T is back with the first show of his weekly laughfest. Widely known for his antics as a stand-up comic and morning drive radio host, Augie's penchant for the absurd and his joy of characterization makes this enterprise a possible template for Island comedy on TV.

OF NOTE

"Gossip Girl Revealed," 7-8:30 p.m., CW. Filled with huge flaws and strengths, "Gossip Girl" has drawn a loyal little audience. CW offers a primer, including interviews with the actors. They're gifted people, tackling characters that are smart and interesting — but absurdly exaggerated and unvaried. It's a mixed blessing.

"In Treatment," 9:30 p.m., HBO. Credit HBO for tackling something with depth, detail and human passion. Each weeknight, we see Gabriel Byrne as an even-keeled psychiatrist. The two-person sessions are low-key, but beautifully written and acted. In the opener, Melissa George plays a young woman whose social-sexual world has crumbled. It's a brilliant and wrenching performance.

"The Harlem Globetrotters," 7 p.m., MyNetwork TV. It's been 14 years since the Globetrotters had a prime-time special. Here's a game with the Washington Generals (hint, bet on the 'Trotters), plus memories from Curly Neal, Sweet Lou Dunbar and Tex Harrison.

"American Gladiators" (NBC), "Dance War" (ABC) and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (Fox), all 7 p.m. Tentative plans call for new rounds of "Gladiators" and "Dance War" and a "Terminator" rerun.

"Cities of the Underworld" season-opener, 10 p.m., History Channel. Under the current buildings of Jerusalem, there are memories of past millennia. Anthropologists have found elaborate basements and tunnels and even a waterway, created during centuries of invasions. It's a fascinating hour.

"The Bob Newhart Show" marathon, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., AmericanLife TV. Following the death of the terrific Suzanne Pleshette — who died Jan. 19 at 70 after years of fighting lung cancer — this baby-boomer channel airs eight episodes. It starts with a terrific one in which Emily (Pleshette) joins Bob's fear-of-flying group.

"Samantha Who," (8 p.m., ABC), and "Rules of Engagement" (9:30 p.m., CBS). Both networks toss in a comedy rerun after the State of the Union coverage. On ABC, Samantha learns that a former boyfriend has a restraining order against her. On CBS, Russell is dating a bag lady.
