Kamehameha and Roosevelt earned the top seeds for this week's Hawai'i High School Athletic Association/JN Automotive Girls State Soccer Championships.

Kamehameha, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is seeded No. 1 in the Division I tournament and opens play Thursday against the winner of Wednesday's Kaiser-Kapolei first-round match. Pearl City, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champ, is No. 2. Kamehameha-Maui, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, is No. 3 and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Konawaena is No. 4.

Roosevelt, the OIA White Conference champion, is the No. 1 seed in Division II. Kamehameha-Hawai'i, the BIIF champ, is No. 2, followed by Kapa'a, the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion, and St. Anthony, the MIL champ.

KIF runner-up Kaua'i will play MIL runner-up Seabury Hall at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Saint Louis for the final DII berth.

MPI COMES TOGETHER IN UPSET OF NO. 1 PUNAHOU

It already had been a tough eight-day stretch for Punahou, the No. 1-ranked boys basketball team in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media.

The Buffanblu held off No. 5 Saint Louis on Jan. 19, ran past No. 2 'Iolani on Tuesday, and withstood a strong challenge from No. 4 Kamehameha on Thursday.

"It's not over yet," Punahou coach Dan Hale said after Thursday's victory. "We've got another tough one Saturday ..."

He was right.

Mid-Pacific entered the game with a 1-6 record in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, but stunned the Buffanblu with a 66-48 road victory, their first over Punahou in recent memory.

"I think that's the first time we've ever beaten Punahou," said Owls coach Kevin O'Connell. "We had played well in the first half of a lot of our games this season, but we just were not able to finish. It was frustrating, so for us to get that win, I think we needed that."

MPI came out strong — leading 22-14 after one period and 41-28 at the half — and finished strong, outscoring the Buffanblu 17-12 in the final quarter.

Junior guard Marcus Holyfield scored a game-high 34 points to lead the Owls, and senior forward Devon Takenaka added 11 points.

O'Connell said Mid-Pacific's unexpected man-to-man defense might have surprised Punahou, and the Owls torched the nets with 75 percent shooting from the field. He also said that after several injuries and illnesses, Saturday night was the first time in league play all five of his starters were at full strength.

"Before the game, we knew to beat Punahou we would have to play as a team, so we asked everyone to think about one thing that they would sacrifice to make the team better," O'Connell said. "I think that helped us — we played so well as a team, instead of trying to attack the basket as individuals."

NOMURA'S ENERGY HELPS BUFFANBLU GIRLS WIN ILH

The return of junior guard Janelle Nomura helped Punahou win its fifth ILH championship in six years Saturday night.

Nomura, who had missed four weeks with an ankle injury, scored 11 points to help the Buffanblu rally past 'Iolani, 49-31.

"She always brings a lot of energy, and the kids feed off of it," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said.

The Raiders had jumped to an 11-0 lead before the Buffanblu tied it at halftime 16-16 and went up 34-25 after three quarters on Nomura's 35-foot buzzer-beater.

Then they outscored 'Iolani 15-6 in the fourth period, applying constant pressure on defense.

"We were talking about energy, collectively as a team," Nomura said. "When we tied it, Coach said just pretend it's 0-0, and together we filled up our energy tank."
