Shindo to address expo luncheon

Dustin Shindo, chairman and CEO of Hoku Scientific Inc., will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon at the eighth Biennial Efficient Electro-Technology Exposition and Conference on Sept. 18 at the Hawaii Convention Center.
The expo will feature more than 20 workshops on renewable energy, energy efficiency and other topics in keeping with its theme, "Sustainable Solutions: Today, Tomorrow, the Future."

ISLE RESIDENT STARTS ONLINE MAGAZINE
Honolulu resident Anthony Luafalealo has launched Amateur Economists, an online magazine for non-economists. The first issue appeared Sunday at www.amateureconomists.com and included articles on healthcare, economics in fiction and the economics of laws. Another piece explores the accuracy of U.S. economic indicators.
"Economics is the study of choices," Luafalealo said in a press statement. "The goal of Amateur Economists is to examine our world today through choices."
FIRMS TO DISCUSS FINANCIAL RESULTS
Bank of Hawaii Corp. will discuss its second-quarter financial performance on a conference call broadcast over the Internet at 8 a.m. Hawai'i time on July 28.
People can listen to the call via the company's Web site, www.boh.com. A replay of the call also will be available on the site.
Also this month, Horizon Lines Inc., the No. 2 carrier of ocean cargo to Hawai'i, will discuss its second-quarter results in a conference call.
That call is available through its site, www.horizonlines.com, and begins at 5 a.m. Hawai'i time on July 25.
ZAPATA MANAGING KAHO'OLAWE SITE
Zapata Inc. has started managing base camp facilities and maintenance activities at Honokanai'a on Kaho'olawe for the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission.
The engineering and field services company began the work earlier this month under a contract with the state of Hawai'i. Eric Brundage, general manager of Zapata's Kailua office, is project manager for the contract.
STATE ACCEPTING BIDS FOR H-1 PROJECT
The state has started accepting bids for the first phase of a project to improve Kapolei's freeway traffic flow.
Bids are being solicited for an estimated $20 million project consisting of an east-bound H-1 Freeway on-ramp and off-ramp for the new interchange at Kamokila Boulevard at Wakea Street, as well as a west-bound freeway off-ramp near Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.
CPB EXPANDS ITS ONLINE BANKING
Central Pacific Bank customers can now go online to open a new bank account.
They can open new personal savings accounts, interest checking and "Totally Free Checking" accounts with their home computer by providing the bank with a signature card or by using an e-signature.
"Expanding our online banking program responds to a rapidly growing customer demand for conducting and managing their financial affairs over the Internet," said Wayne Kirihara, senior vice president of alternative delivery channels.
