Shelby Rivera will represent Hawai'i at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in Las Vegas.

Shelby Rochelle Kanani Rivera was crowned Miss Rodeo Hawai'i 2008 by the Hawai'i Women's Rodeo Association on June 22 in the Diamond J Ranch in Wai'anae.

A 2007 graduate of Waialua High School and Miss Teen Hawai'i 2004, Rivera lives on the Big Island where she works for Big Island Trail Rides in Waipi'o Valley. She is the daughter of Rocky and Pam Rivera of Waialua.

First runner-up in the 2008 pageant is Erin Malia Brittin of Makawao, Maui. A graduate of Oregon State University, Brittin owns Horses R Us in Makawao and is the daughter of E. Brittin, also of Makawao.

The Miss Rodeo Hawai'i 2008 competition included interviews with a panel of three judges and a riding pattern. Rivera will compete in the Miss Rodeo America pageant in Las Vegas from Nov. 28 to Dec. 6.

BOXING

BOUTS SET AT PALOLO DISTRICT PARK GYM

An amateur boxing show will be July 19 at Palolo District Park Gym at 6 p.m.

The event will be hosted by the Kawano Boxing Club, the Palolo Boxing Club and USA-Boxing Hawai'i.

Admission is $10, with seven to 10 bouts scheduled.

VOLLEYBALL

MILILANI U-12 CLUB FINISHES 3RD AT EVENT

The Mililani Volleyball Club finished in third place at the 12-under girls division of the Volleyball Festival in Reno, Nev., last week.

Mililani, the 16th seed, upset top-seeded Jamba Volleyball Club of Southern California en route to the semifinals. Mililani fell to eventual champion, Torrimar Volleyball Club of Puerto Rico, in the semifinals.

FISHING

SHIPYARD TOURNAMENT STARTS TOMORROW

In celebration with the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard's 100th anniversary, the Centennial Captain's Cup Fishing Tournament will be tomorrow at Wai'anae Small Boat Harbor.

Check-in is from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., with fishing to run from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is open to U.S. Navy civilians, military, active and retired personnel of the Pearl Harbor area, along with their friends and family.
