A man was fatally injured last night after being struck by a car about 10:35 p.m. on Farrington Highway near the Ma'ili 7-Eleven store on the Wai'anae Coast.

He was identified by family today as Michael "Smiley" Jones, 54.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said the man was crossing the highway in a marked crosswalk from the makai to the mauka side when he was struck by an eastbound 2003 silver Volkswagen being driven by a 24-year-old man.

Police said the man's left leg was severed in the incident and that he was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. He was pronounced dead about midnight.

The pedestrian was in critical condition when city paramedics arrived at the scene, said city Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic. Cheplic said the driver of the vehicle that struck the man declined treatment at the scene.

The driver involved in the collision had not been drinking but may have been speeding, police said.

The fatality was the 27th of the year so far on O'ahu compared to 40 during the same period last year.
