RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — The United States defeated Poland 25-18, 23-25, 27-25, 18-25, 16-14 today to remain alive in the World League volleyball finals.

William Priddy closed out the fifth set with his fourth ace of the match at Maracanazinho stadium.

Priddy was one of the leading scorers for the United States with 21 points. Honolulu's Clay Stanley also added 21 points for the Americans. Mariusz Wlazly of Poland led all scorers with 31 points.

Six teams are playing in the competition's final stage in Rio, and the top two from each group will qualify for the semifinals.

Brazil and Russia lead Group E, which had the Russians beating Japan 25-14, 26-24, 25-18 to virtually secure a semifinal berth. It will advance if five-time defending champion Brazil beats the Japanese team on Friday. The Brazilians routed Russia in three sets on Wednesday.
