Stop Rail Now today said it will sue if city officials reject a petition to get an anti-rail question on the general election ballot.
The group, which has gathered more than 40,000 signatures, wants to overturn the city clerk's opinion that the question cannot be placed on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election.
Stop Rail Now plans to deliver their petition to the city clerk on Aug. 4.
"The city clerk has already written to us that she will reject it on behalf of the City Council," said Stop Rail Now attorney Earl Partington, in a news release. "If the City Council, through the city clerk, refuses to accept the filing and place the issue on the ballot when the petition is presented the week after next, we will be filing suit to compel the city clerk to put the issue on the ballot."
