Ten of Hawai'i's 254 schools did not pass their annual fire inspections, according to results reported by the state Department of Education's Safety and Security Section.

The results of the 16th annual School Fire Inspection Program mean 96 percent of schools that were inspected had no violations.

School officials are attributing the small percentage of schools cited for fire code violations to the county fire departments' partnership and work with schools. Local fire departments conduct a pre-fire inspection and help schools to meet all fire code requirements.

Schools with outstanding violations for fire alarm systems are: Honoka'a Elementary, Honoka'a High, King Kekaulike High, King Intermediate, Konawaena High, Mililani High and Moloka'i High.

Aliamanu Middle (hood system) and Lokelani Intermediate (dry stand pipe pressure) were cited for fire-related issues.

The DOE Facilities Maintenance Branch and respective Neighbor Island government agencies are addressing the violations.

All schools in the Honolulu and Kaua'i districts passed.

Each year, starting in mid-October, county and federal fire inspectors conduct the annual School Fire Inspection Program over a four-week period.

The inspections identify fire code and related building code violations and make recommendations for corrections and improvements.
