Twenty-three college and high school students have been working as interns for six weeks in various Kaua'i County departments and private businesses as part of the Summer Youth Employment Program.

Among the interns are Chaminade University marketing major Nannie Apalla and Kurt Yasutake, who is studying finance and business at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Both are juniors and are working in the county's Information Technology Division.

Tasked with helping the IT Division roll out 40 new computers, the summer interns have spent most of their time configuring the systems and setting them up at different job sites. They also worked closely with each user fitting each individual with the right software.

"Every day, there's something new to learn about the inner workings of computers," Apalla said.

"The interns have been a tremendous help," said their supervisor Beth Mallia. "It's great to be part of a well-organized team that supports the summer intern program and other programs that ultimately benefit the county."
