Hawaii Babe Ruth team wins opener

Rick Nomura hit two home runs to power Hawai'i to a 10-0 victory over host El Segundo, Calif., in the Babe Ruth (ages 13-15) Pacific Southwest Regional yesterday.
Nomura batted 3 for 3, including a two-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the fourth.
Winning pitcher Marcus Yoshii worked five innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Alakai Aglipay finished with two hitless innings.
Kaeo Aliviado, Kale Kaalekahi and Sumi Pruett each added two hits for Hawai'i, which plays Northern California champion Tri-Valley tomorrow.
MID-PACIFIC PREVAILS
Gavin Kinoshita pitched a three-hitter as Mid-Pacific beat Kamehameha, 11-1, Saturday night in the American Legion Senior Division state championship game at Hans L'Orange Park.
Todd Nagamine had three hits, and Wade Tamaru, Justin Protacio and Dane Fujinaka each had two hits for Mid-Pacific.
Mid-Pacific advances to the Western Regional in Surprise, Ariz., where it opens against the California champion on Aug. 14.
BOXING
WAI'ANAE FIGHTERS WIN
Shayson Soares of Wai'anae Boxing Club won his second straight National Junior Golden Gloves title, defeating Ellison Melik of Colorado by 5-0 decision in the 75-pound, 13-14 age division final yesterday in Mesquite, Nev.
Jonathan Dinong won the 145-pound championship, while fellow Wai'anae boxers Dido Rodrigues and Ranson Soares lost in their title bouts.
SAILING
RAINDROP FIRST FINISHER
Raindrop, a doublehanded Cascade 36 from Portland, Ore., arrived Saturday afternoon as the first to finish the 15th biennial Pacific Cup Yacht Race from San Francisco Bay to Kane'ohe Bay.
Raindrop, which started the 2,070-mile race on July 14, edged Hula Girl, a Santa Cruz 50 from San Francisco, by approximately 19 1/2 minutes. Raindrop was skippered by Joby Easton with Bill Huseby as crew.
Hula Girl, skippered by Daniel Cayard with seven aboard, started on July 17.
As many as 24 yachts were expected to arrive at Kane'ohe Bay by last night.
SURFING
SNOW TAKES THIRD
Ned Snow of the Big Island placed third and Noah Shimabukuro of Maui was fourth in the longboard division of the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Taylor Jenson of California won the longboard final.
The final of the men's pro division was also run yesterday, with Nathaniel Curran of California defeating France's Tim Boal in the final.
Hawai'i surfers Torrey Meister, Dusty Payne and Roy Powers were eliminated earlier in the day.
Payne lost to Boal in the quarterfinals; Meister and Powers lost in the round of 16.
GOLF
SONNENBERG TRIUMPHS
Eric Sonnenberg shot a final-round 3-under 69 yesterday to capture the Amatour Hawai'i 'Ewa Beach Championship.
Sonnenberg finished with 1-over 143 at the 'Ewa Beach Golf Club to win the tour's first major. Mike Kawate (69—146) was second and Tommy Yamashita (75—147) third.
