Laguna Niguel maintains billfish lead

The fish were biting yesterday at the 49th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kailua, Kona.
Forty hookups resulted in 16 Pacific blue marlin and three short-nose spearfish being tagged and released.
"This is exactly what is supposed to happen in the summertime here in Kona," said HIBT founder Peter Fithian, mindful that 15 teams added valuable tag-and-release points to their totals yesterday. "The moon dictates the tides, and the tides coupled with a new moon, make for great fishing."
Twenty minutes into the 9-hour day of fishing, tournament leader Laguna Niguel Billfish Club Team #2 reported a hookup. Angler Chris Ross fought the estimated 295-pound Pacific blue marlin for a little more than 35 minutes before tagging and releasing the fish. That helped the club from California maintain its lead with three-day total of 1,797 points.
TENNIS
SEEDS MOVE ON
The second-seeded team of Mika Maatta and Jan Tribler defeated No. 5 seeds Bradlee Lum-Tucker and Jesse Paer, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, last night in the quarterfinals of the Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles at Kailua Racquet Club.
In another quarterfinal match, No. 3 seeds Ikaika Jobe and Bryan Wooten ousted No. 6 seeds Stefan Pampulov and Henry Somerville, 7-5, 6-2.
Competition resumes tomorrow night with No. 1 seeds Minh Le and Wei-Yu Su playing No. 4 seeds Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen in one semifinal with Maata and Tribler taking on Jobe and Wooten in the other semifinal.
GOLF
FUJIKAWA FIRES 75
Moanalua High senior Tadd Fujikawa shot a 3-over-par 75 yesterday in the opening round of the Sun Chlorella Classic at the Otaru Country Club in Hokkaido, Japan.
Fujikawa had one birdie and four bogeys in shooting nines of 37-38.
The leader in the clubhouse was Akio Sadakata, who shot a 3-under 69. The first round was still under way when this edition went to press.
HAWAI'I IN EIGHTH
David Fink shot a second consecutive 2-over-par 74 yesterday as the Hawai'i team settled into eighth place at the 36th Boys Junior Americas Cup at Vancouver, Wash.
Hawai'i has a two-day total of 19-over 451. Mexico leads the 17-team field with 5-over 437, followed by Southern California (438) and Oregon (442).
Fink is tied for 13th at 4-over 148. Other Hawai'i golfers: Alika Bell (77—150, tie 16th), Bradley Shigezawa (75—156, tie 31st) and Taeksoo Kim (78—156, tie 31st).
Southern California's Patrick Cantlay leads the 67-player field at 5-under 139.
SURFING
KAUA'I SURFERS ADVANCE
Kaua'i surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Roy Powers advanced to the third round of the Rip Curl Pro Search men's contest yesterday.
The first round was run in 6- to 8-foot waves at a secret location "somewhere" in Indonesia.
Andy Irons, the defending champion of the event, was one of the standouts of the first round, recording a two-wave score of 18.4 (out of 20).
"It's beautiful and wally out there, and the waves are just draining all the way across the reef," he said.
His younger brother Bruce Irons had a two-wave score of 17.77.
As first-round winners, the Irons brothers and Powers received a bye in the second round.
Fellow Hawai'i surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan did not win in the first round, and will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin.
The contest is the sixth of 11 stops on the 2008 World Championship Tour.
BASEBALL
HILO ROLLS TO 9-1 WIN
Koa Matson pitched five solid innings and Hilo had 15 hits to beat Anchorage, Alaska, 9-1, yesterday in the Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) Western Regional at Aliso Viejo, Calif.
Matson allowed one run, and Chase Kaaua, Jordan Jinbo and Conner Yoshioka finished off the six-hitter.
Ridge Hoopii-Haslem, Kean Wong, Ekolu Martens, Jayce Carvalho, Matson and Jinbo each had two hits for Hilo (2-0).
Hilo will play Scottsdale, Ariz., today at 1 p.m. (Hawai'i time).

BASKETBALL
BATTLE AT MANOA
The Fifth Annual Street Sports 3-on-3 B-Ball Battle will be held Saturday and Sunday at Manoa Valley District Park.
The tournament is ages 8 and older. Winning teams will qualify for Hoop Jam, Aug. 16 and 17, at Aloha Stadium.
In addition, there will be a clinic for children ages 6 to 15 taught by former University of Hawai'i standout Tes Whitlock from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on both days. Participants may also sign up for a slam dunk and 3-point shootout.
