Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunken driving last week, raising this year's DUI arrest total to 595 compared with 545 over the same time span last year.

Three of the drivers arrested last week were involved in crashes and two were 21 or younger.

While DUI arrests are up 9 percent, Big Island police said major accidents are down 12 percent to 769 from 878.

There have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 16 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent.
