A high surf advisory for south-facing shores of all islands is in effect until tomorrow evening, the National Weather Service says.

Forecasters said that waves could reach heights of 8 feet, which they termed a "run of the mill advisory."

The weather service said a low-pressure area east of New Zealand on May 30 had generated the waves, which made a long journey across the Pacific before arriving off Hawai'i's southern shores.

Surf along the south-facing shores is expected to reach 8 feet tonight and produce rip currents.

Otherwise, the local forecast called for scattered showers today and tomorrow on O'ahu, mainly during the afternoon. The rain could be heavy at times but no significant accumulation is expected.

The high both days is expected to be 81 or 82 degrees with a low of 65.

Winds should be from the east at 8 mph.
