MLB: Indians put All-Star catcher Martinez on DL

Associated Press

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians placed All-Star catcher Victor Martinez on the 15-day disabled list today, adding another marquee name to their list of ailing players.

Second baseman Josh Barfield, just called up on Monday, also went on the 15-day DL with a strained left middle finger.

Martinez has an inflamed right elbow, and the Indians gave no immediate timetable for his return. But the DL stint indicates the ballclub considers the injury more serious than a bout of soreness that could improve with a short rest.

Martinez had an MRI exam today and team trainer Lonnie Soloff was expected to address all of the team's injuries.

Indians right-hander Jake Westbrook was scheduled to have Tommy John surgery Thursday on his right elbow. Right-hander Fausto Carmona, a 19-game winner a year ago, has been out since May 24 with a strained left hip, and designated hitter Travis Hafner is on the DL with a sore right shoulder.

Cleveland was expected to purchase the contracts of catcher Yamid Haad and infielder Jorge Velandia from its Triple-A affiliate at Buffalo. The Indians have to clear two spots on their 40-man roster in order to make the moves.

Martinez, who has battled a sore left hamstring since opening day, winced as he swung at a pitch in the first inning of Cleveland's 8-5 loss to Minnesota on Wednesday night. He grounded out to shortstop, returned to the dugout, and was replaced by Kelly Shoppach behind the plate to start the second inning.

Martinez, who hit .301 with a team-leading 25 homers and 114 RBIs a year ago as the Indians won the AL Central, has yet to homer this season in 198 at-bats, the longest drought of his career. He is batting .278 overall, but only .216 (25-for-116) since April 30.
