LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL
The action thriller "Wanted," starring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, is the opening-night feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival and kicks off 10 days presenting the best of American and international independent cinema. The festival screens more than 175 narrative features, documentaries, shorts and music videos. Now in its 14th year, the festival has grown into a world-class event, uniting new filmmakers with critics, scholars, film masters and the movie-loving public. $12, www.lafilmfest.com.

DANCE FOR MIND AND BODY
Experience movement while balancing mind and body, centering the self and creating energy via physical expression in Shizuno Nasu's summer class in Volcano, on the Big Island This six-session class includes warm-up exercises to stretch and shape the body and dance movements, which are based on Hara Tanden Chi Energy. This Asian movement technique increases concentration and enlightens the spirit through relaxation and graceful body movements based on f'u (wind), sui (water), and ka (fire). The class is open to adults at any level, including beginners.

CELEBRATION OF LIGHTS
Vancouver's Celebration of Light is the largest firework competition in the world, attracting around 1.4 million spectators every year. The U.S., Canada and China each present a full display: Canada, July 23, U.S., July 26 and China, July 30, before all the teams take part in the Grand Finale, Aug. 2. Each show lasts about 25 minutes, and local firefighters raise funds for the continuing festival and the Vancouver Fire Fighters Charitable Society. Displays start at 10 p.m. The best places to watch from are English Bay, Kitsilano, Vanier Park, Jericho Beach and West Vancouver. Free. www.celebration-of-light.com.
