Top seeds advance in 100th Manoa Cup

The top eight seeds all won opening-round matches yesterday in the 100th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.
Defending champion Kurt Nino was a 3-and-2 winner over Tyler Ota and second-seeded Alex Ching ousted Dwight Kaho'ohanohano, 5 and 4. Nino and Ching, an OCC member, both won Hawai'i state high school golf championships.
Four-time Manoa Cup champion Brandan Kop, an OCC member seeded third, defeated Christopher Armanini, 4 and 3. Fourth-seeded Samuel Rodriguez III beat 'Iolani alum and Stanford volleyball star Kawika Shoji, 3 and 2.
In the day's most intriguing match, 14-year-old Lorens Chan, seeded fifth and a semifinalist last year, beat 1969 Manoa Cup champion Paul Spengler Jr., 4 and 3. Spengler, a member of the Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame, turns 69 Monday.
Other former Manoa Cup champions moving on were Kellen-Floyd Asao, Jonathan Ota, Travis Toyama and Ryan Perez.
Second-round matches tee off from 7 to 8:45 a.m. today, with Nino going out first in his match with Corey Kozuma.
Third-round matches are tomorrow, with quarterfinals and semifinals Friday and the 36-hole final Saturday.

3 HAWAI'I FIGHTERS WIN
Hawai'i boxers won three bouts and lost two yesterday in the opening round of the Junior Olympic National Championships at Marquette, Mich.
Wai'anae's Joshua McShane beat Jovanni Diaz of Las Vegas by tiebreaker in their 106-pound bout that was deadlocked at 14 points apiece after three rounds. McShane was awarded the victory by virtue of his 31-25 edge in punch count.
Honolulu's Emmit Bolibol decisioned Ricky Lacefield of Lincoln, Neb., 7-4, at 114 pounds, and Kihei's Joshua Nakagawa decisioned Sammy Villa of Fair Oaks, Calif., 16-11, at 154 pounds.
Also yesterday, Luis Abrosio of Fresno, Calif., decisioned Pearl City's Kurtis Hagi, 27-6, at 110 pounds, and Mike McGown of Hattiesburg, Miss., decisioned Hawai'i's Ansen Armitage, 28-8, at 119 pounds.
The four-day event features more than 200 of the nation's top male and female boxers.

BROOKS BOOSTS U.S.
Punahou graduate Brandon Brooks made six saves to help the U.S. Men's Senior National team hold off China, 13-9, yesterday at the FINA World League Super Final in Genova, Italy.
For the second straight day, the U.S. fell into a first-quarter hole. This time it rallied behind team captain Tony Azevedo, who scored seven goals. The game was tied 5-5 at the half. The Americans outscored China 5-2 in the fourth quarter.
Monday, the U.S. lost to Italy 15-14 in a shootout. Brooks did not play in that match.
The U.S. plays Spain tomorrow.
TENNIS
LAM FAILS TO QUALIFY
After winning two matches, Honolulu's Chris Lam lost in the final round of qualifying Monday at the $15,000 Trius Technologies Futures in Sacramento, Calif. Lam fell to 10th-seeded Daniel Danilovic, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Lam fought off four match points in the tiebreaker.
