Union fined for excess campaign contributions

The Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission is fining a labor union $375 for donating too much money to Rep. Dwight Takamine.
Takamine's campaign says the Hilo Democrat was never under investigation, and the excess donation was returned within 30 days.
The Iron Workers Local 626 Stabilization Fund gave $5,500 to Takamine's campaign, $1,500 more than the $4,000 limit allowed by law in a four-year election period.
The union says its conciliation agreement spells out that it did not knowingly or intentionally violate the law.
Takamine is running for re-election in Kohala and North Hilo. He's being opposed by Republican Ted Hong, who is backed by Gov. Linda Lingle.
