Diving: Wilkinson holds off Ishimatsu to earn third trip to Olympics
INDIANAPOLIS — Laura Wilkinson earned her third trip to the Olympics, holding off 15-year-old Haley Ishimatsu on 10-meter platform at the U.S. diving trials.
Wilkinson botched her second dive badly, her legs flailing apart as she crashed into the water. But, as the 30-year-old is known for doing, she bounced back with a remarkable effort the next time up the big tower.
On a reverse 3½ somersault tuck, Wilkinson barely made a splash on her entry into the pool. She crawled out, bowed toward the water and looked up to see all 10s on the scoreboard.
Wilkinson, who won the gold medal on platform at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finished with 1214.50 points. Ishimatsu, who likely will be selected for the second 10-meter spot at a camp in Tennessee, was second with 1140.40.
Also Sunday, David Boudia won the men's 10-meter.
