STATEWIDE FATALITY BREAKDOWN

As of yesterday, 54 people have died in traffic accidents this year in Hawai�i as compared to 67 by this date in 2007.

The updated 2008 island-by-island breakdown as compiled by The Advertiser:

O�AHU (24) � Vehicle (11 deaths/10 crashes; pending one medical), pedestrian (7), motorcycle (4), moped (1), bicycle (1).

BIG ISLAND (12) � Vehicle (9), motorcycle (2), pedestrian (1).

MAUI (11) � Vehicle (5, includes one for Moloka�i), motorcycle (4), pedestrian (2).

KAUA�I (7) � Vehicle (6 deaths/5 crashes), pedestrian (1).

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office today identified the Mililani man killed yesterday in a freeway collision near Waiawa as Charles Hiromasa, 54.

Autopsy findings listed cause of death as multiple blunt injuries due to a motor vehicle collision and manner as accidental.

Hiromasa was pronounced dead at the scene of a 10:26 a.m. collision on the H-1 Freeway eastbound, 400 feet east of the Farrington Highway overpass.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Hiromasa's 2003 Toyota Matrix was struck by a 2002 Saturn sedan executing a lane change, causing it to collide with a freeway light pole and flip over against a concrete barrier.

Hiromasa was O'ahu's seventh traffic fatality of the month and its 11th in a 42-day period dating back to May 15.
