Hawai'i's Bryan Clay led the standings after placing first in two of the first five events of the decathlon today at U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials at Eugene, Ore.

The top three finishers, who have met Olympic performance standards, will earn a spot on the Team USA roster for the Olympic Games in Beijing in August.

Clay, a Castle High alum who now lives in Glendora, Calif., won the 100-meter dash, finished sixth in the long jump, fifth in the shot put tied for first in the high jump and finished sixth in the 400 meters in 48.41. He leads with 4,476 points, followed by Trey Hardee (4,454), Tom Pappas (4,405), Jangy Addy (4,249) and Ashton Eaton (4,226).

The final five events — 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 — are tomorrow.

Clay won the 100 in 10.39 seconds (1,001 points), while Hardee was second in 10.43.

In the long jump, Clay was sixth with a jump of 7.39 meters (24 feet, 3 inches). Tom Pappas won with a 7.77 (25-6).

Clay was fifth in the shot put with throw of 15.17 meters (49-9.25). Pappas was first in 17.26 (56-6).

Clay tied for first in the high jump with Chris Boyles and Ryan Olkowski, clearing 2.08 meters (6-9.75).

In the 400 meters, Clay finished sixth in 48.41 seconds. Eaton won in 47.07.

Clay is hoping to bounce back following a frustrating 2007 when injuries kept him from finishing the decathlon at the USA Outdoor Championships and World Outdoor Championships. In his only full decathlon in 2007, Clay finished third in Gotzis with 8,493 points, the fifth-best mark in the world that year. He ended the 2007 ranked No. 6 in the world.

Clay got off to a strong start this year with a gold medal in the heptathlon at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain.

Pappas is trying to make his third U.S. Olympic team.
