Salutes

  • Aha Hipuu, which comprises the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Na Wahine Hui O Kamehameha I, Ahahui Kaahumanu, Hale O Na Ali'i O Hawaii and Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors - Mamakakaua, recently presented the Kalani Ali'i Awards, which acknowledge the creative spirit of the people who preserve Native Hawaiian culture. Honorees were: Winona Rubin Ellis, Hawaiian civic leader; Aunty Mary Lou Kekuewa, feather lei making expert; Dr. Niklaus Schweitzer, German language professor fluent in Hawaiian; David Merrit Peters, Hawaiian civic leader; Dr. Edith McKinzie, Hawaiian scholar.

  • Chief Justice Ronald Moon has appointed Anthony Bartholomew as judge of the District Family Court of the Third Circuit, Island of Hawai'i. Bartholomew fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Family Court Judge Terence Yoshioka.

    Bartholomew has been deputy public defender with the Office of the Public Defender in Hilo. He was an associate with the Honolulu law firm of Hart and Wolf. Prior to that, he was in private practice.

  • H-POWER, Honolulu's waste-to-energy facility, received an Excellence in Safety Award recently at the 2008 Governor's Biennial Pacific Rim Safety and Health Conference.

    H-POWER, the only facility in the state certified for both the Hawaii Voluntary Protection Program and the Environmental Protection Agency National Environmental Performance Track Program, accomplished the highest levels attainable for safety and environmental achievement.
