Gymnastics: Flu knocks out silver medalist from Am. Cup

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Reigning world silver medalist Fabian Hambuechen withdrew from the American Cup today because of the flu.

The German had the flu last week, but decided Monday to come to the American Cup. After warm-ups today, he realized he was too weak to compete.

"I was sick last week. We decided I would compete here," said Hambuechen, who also won the high bar title and a bronze in the team competition at worlds. "But today I felt bad."

Hambuechen was expected to challenge reigning Olympic champion Paul Hamm for the American Cup title. This is Hamm's first international meet since returning from his 2 1/2-year layoff after the Athens Olympics.

The field includes men who finished second, third and fourth at last year's worlds.
