The state Department of Transportation has opened cell phone waiting lots at the Kahului and Lihu'e airports, allowing motorists to park and wait for arriving passengers to call for pickup.

The Kahului Airport lot is on Hemaloa Street, next to UPS cargo facilities, and will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Parking is free, and motorists will be allowed to wait up to an hour on the property. Unattended vehicles will be cited and possibly towed.

The Lihu'e lot is curbside along Ho'olimalima Place, next to the car rental facilities and just a few minutes away from the airport terminal. It will be available for use from 5 a.m. to the close of business daily.

A similar cell phone waiting area opened this week at Hilo Airport, and earlier at Honolulu Airport.

The DOT also added a new express lane to the public pay-parking lot at Maui Airport that accepts credit cards.

DROWNED SURFER WAS FROM BRAZIL

A surfer who died Thursday in Mokule'ia has been identified as Rodrigo Salva, 33, of Waialua and Brazil, the Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office said yesterday.

An autopsy determined that Salva died of asphyxia due to drowning, a spokesman said.

Salva was brought to shore unconscious about 3:15 p.m. Thursday at a Mokule'ia surf spot known as "Sylva's Channel" and died at Wahiawa General Hospital.

KC WAFFLE DOGS TO AID FUNDRAISER

Pearl City High School volunteers will sell KC Drive Inn waffle dogs at Cutter Ford Aiea today and tomorrow to raise money for the school's Project Graduation.

Volunteers will sell the waffle dogs for $3.75, including a drink, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cutter Ford will also donate $100 to the project graduation for every new car or truck sold on those two days.

RESURFACING WORK TO CLOSE H-1 LANES

The two right-most lanes of H-1 Freeway east-bound will be closed next week from the Waikele/Waipahu off-ramp to the Kamehameha Highway off-ramp from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. through Friday morning.

The closure will allow state crews to conduct pavement resurfacing work.

The east-bound Pa'iwa Street on-ramp will also be closed at those times.

East-bound residents are advised to use alternative freeway entrances from Fort Weaver Road, Kamehameha Highway or Farrington Highway.

The $4.6 million pavement preservation project runs from Waipahu Street to Waikele Stream. Expected completion time is June.

MAUI INTERSECTION LANES TO BE CLOSED

KAHULUI, Maui — Traffic at the busy intersection at Hana Highway and Dairy Road will be affected Monday night by crews working on traffic signals, state transportation officials said.

The signals will not be operational from 8 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday, and single lanes of the road will be closed during that period. Police officers will be directing traffic through the intersection.
