Kahuku girls, Punahou boys assume early lead

Kahuku's girls and Punahou's boys took the early lead in the team standings yesterday at the Chevron/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships.
After yesterday's qualifying, preliminary, quarterfinal and consolation bracket rounds, Kahuku's girls lead the way with 70 points, followed by Kamehameha (52), 'Iolani (48) and Pearl City (42).
Kahuku has six wrestlers advancing to today's semifinal rounds scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Blaisdell Arena. 'Iolani has four semifinalists and Kamehameha, Kapolei and Punahou three each.
The girls championship matches will start at 4:30 p.m. and the boys finals at 6:30 p.m.
Defending champion Punahou has a commanding lead in the boys team standings with 111.5 points, followed by Lahainaluna (75), Kamehameha (68), Pearl City (59.5) and 'Aiea (43).
Punahou has 11 wrestlers advancing into today's semifinals. Lahainaluna and Kamehameha have six each.
In yesterday's girls competition, only one of the 11 No. 1 seeds failed to advance into today's semifinals. Baldwin's Pi'ikea Kalalau, the 2007 state champion at 130 pounds, lost her 140-pound quarterfinal match to Punahou's Ilima Macfarlane.
Defending state champions Renee Michell (98 pounds) of Konawaena, Keiko Akamine (103) and Megan Morisada (114) of 'Iolani, Danica Auna (120) of Kahuku and Tani Ader (125) of Farrington all advanced to the semifinals.
Morisada, who won state titles at 108 pounds in 2006 and 114 last year, faces No. 1 seed Chaelynn Tan of Kapolei in a highly anticipated semifinal today.
On the boys side, unseeded Jordan Ng of Punahou upset No. 1 seed Jason Spiker of Kaiser in the 103-pound preliminary round and will face No. 4 seed David Terao of Mid-Pacific in today's semifinals.
At 135 pounds, unseeded Chad Diamond of Mililani upset No. 1 seed Andrew Chung of 'Iolani in the preliminary round and will face No. 4 seed Jireh Torres-Umi of Moloka'i in today's semifinals.
And at 215 pounds, unseeded Jesse Santana of Kahuku upset No. 1 seed Marcus Finau of Damien in the preliminary round and will face unseeded Jamin Meletia of Kamehameha in today's semifinals.
Defending champions Travis Okano (Lahainaluna, 130 pounds), Daniel Chow (Punahou, 145 pounds), Lake Casco (Lahainaluna, 160 pounds) and Lowen Tynanes-Perez (Kailua, 171 pounds) all advanced to the semifinals.
Okano is trying to become Lahainaluna's first three-time champ, having won at 119 pounds in 2006 and at 125 last year. Chow also is going after his third title, having won at 135 pounds in 2006 and at 140 last year.
