A 34-year-old Maui man was killed and another man critically injured when their car ran off the road and struck a utility pole last night in Kihei, police said.
The driver of the 2002 four-door Honda Accord was killed instantly in the crash on North Kihei Road. His 41-year-old front-seat passenger is at Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
Police are not releasing the name of the victim until next of kin is notified, said Vehicular Homicide Unit supervisor Lt. Robert Hill.
Investigators said the Accord was headed toward Wailuku on North Kihei Road at 11:36 p.m. when the driver apparently lost control of the car, which went off the right shoulder of the road and hit a utility pole.
Police have not determined if the driver and his passenger were wearing seatbelts or if drugs and alcohol were involved.
The death was Maui County's fourth traffic fatality of the year, compared with two at the same time last year.
