Another Strip implosion may be on the way, though it will probably be a small one. SBE Entertainment, which owns the Sahara, has released plans for the remodeling of the resort and they include demolishing the smallest of three existing towers (200 rooms) and building a 520-foot 1,000-room tower in its place. The move would raise the Sahara's total room count to 2,506. New restaurants and nightclubs will also be added. No cost estimates were disclosed; however, a 2011 completion date was set.
Korea Town Plaza, an indoor complex about 5 miles west of the Strip on Spring Mountain Road, is in its finishing stages. Developers say the plaza, which will host retail and restaurants, may open this month. The success of Las Vegas' Chinatown district, closer to the Strip on the same road, continues to spur more Asian-related development in the area.
Rat Pack Moves: One of Las Vegas' top low-price shows, "The Rat Pack is Back," has moved downtown. It's now playing at the Plaza, with tickets starting at $49. If you check the discount ticket booths on the Strip, there's a good chance you can get half off on this show the day of the performance.
Happy Vic's: Trader Vic's at Planet Hollywood offers a weekday happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. where you can get $1 pork sliders, a bucket of beers for $15, and 2-for-1 on Vic's famous mai tais. Sit on the patio and take in the amazing view of the rising CityCenter construction project across the Strip.
Q. Which nightclubs were involved in the IRS raids last week?
A. As of now, it looks like only Pure Management Group was targeted when agents for the IRS raided its offices and the Pure nightclub at Caesars Palace recently. Speculation is that records were seized in an attempt to gain insight into the club's finances, much of which is tied to cash payments. Insiders believe could be just the tip of the iceberg in what might become a very big deal involving many of Las Vegas' megaclubs.
