Homecoming for Hussey, Horswill

Two Eastern Kentucky players will feel right at home today when the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament begins today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Eastern Kentucky, a public university with an enrollment of 16,000, was founded in 1874 as Central University.
Waimanalo's Shyenne Hussey, a 2006 graduate of Kailua, has been a hit at EKU since arriving at the Richmond, Ky. campus last year.
As a freshman, Hussey was named second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference and was selected to the OVC All-Newcomer team after she led the Eastern Kentucky in eight offensive categories, including average (.371), hits (65), RBIs (43), doubles (13), home runs (eight) and total bases (102).
Hussey, a first baseman, is hitting .375 this season with a team-high three home runs and is tied for the team lead with 15 RBIs. She is slugging a staggering .750 with an on-base percentage of .487. Defensively, she has yet to commit an error.
Freshman DeAnn Horswill, a 2007 Kalaheo graduate from Kailua, has seen action in just one game and has yet to record any statistics. Horswill is listed as a catcher and outfielder.
EKU (8-4) is coming off wins Sunday over Cleveland State and Appalachian State.
Eastern Kentucky plays Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. and Hawai'i at 5 p.m. today.
Other teams in the field include No. 22 Washington, Idaho State and the Netherlands National Team.
The tournament runs through Sunday.
MORE SOFTBALL
California freshman first basemen Sanoe Kekahuna (Baldwin '07) went 5 of 18 in five games last weekend. Kekahuna hit two doubles, drew two walks, drove in two runs and scored three runs at a tournament hosted by UNLV. The Bears went 4-1 over the weekend, including a win over Hawai'i.
Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.) sophomore second baseman Kelly Nishitomi (Castle '06 of Kane'ohe) went 1 for 2 and scored a run in a 2-1 win over Willamette Sunday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Colorado School of Mines junior guard Kyle Pape ('Iolani '05 of Honolulu) was a unanimous selection to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division First Team. Pape started all 29 games, averaging 20.7 points per game, second-best in the RMAC.
Lewis & Clark (Portland, Ore.) senior basketball player Gene Rivera (Maui '04 of Kahului) was named honorable mention All-Northwest Conference.
Washington State senior guard Derrick Low ('Iolani '04 of Honolulu) scored 15 points with four rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 70-49 rout of California Thursday. Low scored 14 points with four boards and two assists in a 60-53 loss at Stanford Saturday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Holy Names (Oakland, Calif.) sophomore Mana Camara (Kalani '06 of Honolulu) had 12 points and nine rebounds in a 52-46 win over Cal State East Bay in the California Pacific Conference title game. Holy Names (19-13) earned an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
SWIMMING & DIVING
North Carolina State junior Andrew Lester (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) was ninth overall in the 400-yard individual medley (3:56.50) at last weekend's ACC Championships in Atlanta. Lester finished first in the B-Final. He was 11th (15:34.55) in the 1,650-yard freestyle race and swam the third leg of N.C. State's ninth-place (3:01.62) 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Florida State sophomore Aleia Monden (St. Andrew's '06 of Mililani) was sixth (243.05 points) in the 1-meter diving event at the ACC Championships. Monden was fifth (249.45) in the platform diving event.
UCLA freshman Brittany Beauchan (Punahou '07 of Kailua) finished 12th (2:18.39) in the 200-yard breaststroke at last weekend's Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Stanford sophomore setter Kawika Shoji ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) had a match-high 70 assists in a five-game win over Hawai'i Wednesday. Freshman outside hitter Spencer McLachlin (Punahou '07 of Honolulu) had 19 kills and seven digs and freshman libero Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha '06 of Honolulu) had 23 digs. Shoji had 46 assists and 10 digs in Thursday's sweep of the Warriors. McLachlin had 11 kills and four digs, and Inafuku added 12 digs.
Cal State Northridge senior outside hitter Isaac Kneubuhl (Kamehameha '03 of Pukalani) had 20 kills on 36 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage in a five-game win over then-No. 2 Long Beach State Friday. Kneubuhl had 14 kills Saturday in a four-game win over UC San Diego.
BASEBALL
San Diego State shortstop Troy Hanzawa (Mid-Pacific '03 of Wahiawa) batted 7 for 15 with a triple and home run at the University of San Diego Tournament.
Cal Poly pitcher Derrick Saito (Baldwin '05 of Wailuku) pitched six scoreless innings of four-hit ball with nine strikeouts in a 2-1 win against Fresno State on Saturday. He had a no-decision in the outcome, which was part of the USD Tournament.
Brigham Young first baseman Kasey Ko (Punahou '05) went 5 for 14 in a four-game series against Gonzaga, including a three-run home run Saturday in a 13-9 win.
Penn State shortstop Landon Nakata (Punahou '05) hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning, in a 4-3 win against Kennesaw State in the ScreenTech Wiregrass Classic in Dothan, Ala. on Saturday.
Southern Utah's Hawai'i contingent inflicted most of the damage in a 13-8 win against Utah Valley State on Thursday. Second baseman Keli'i Zablan (Saint Louis '05) batted 2 for 5 with four RBIs, DH Bucky Aona (Punahou '06) went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, first baseman Chester Wilson (Saint Louis '05) batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a double, and center fielder Nick Freitas (Kamehameha '05) went 2 for 4 and scored three runs.
Northwestern State outfielder Dylan Libadisos ('Aiea '04) hit his first home run of the season in a 15-4 loss to Mississippi on Feb. 26.
Through 19 games, Point Loma Nazarene outfielder Kaohi Downing (Punahou '05) is second on his team in hitting at .386 and leads the team with 19 RBIs. He also is tied for the team lead with nine stolen bases.
Williamette pitcher Kelsey Nakata (Mililani '05) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday in an 8-4 win against Lewis & Clark. He had four strikeouts.
GOLF
Pacific University freshman Max Bonk (Hawai'i Prep '07 of Kameula) shot a 9-over-par 153 to win the George Fox Invitational in Medford, Ore.
TENNIS
Lewis & Clark sophomore tennis player Lisa Harunaga (Kamehameha '06 of Kailua) was named the Pioneers' Athlete of the Week. Harunaga, playing at No. 2 singles, won in straight sets in matches against Pacific and George Fox last week. She teamed with Maggie Peach to win her doubles' match by a score of 8-1.
