A welcome opening of Iroquois Point beach

StoryChat: Comment on this story

An agreement to open Iroquois Point Beach to the public is a positive development in the ongoing battle to protect what many consider a sacred right in Hawai'i: public access to public beaches.

The deal, reached among the Navy, the private developers and public officials, properly recognizes the preeminence of the public interest.

In this case, the private developers are the owners of the Iroquois Point Island Club, who leased the property from the Navy and developed what its promotional Web site calls a "resort style community with a small town feeling." It boasts a spectacular view of Diamond Head and "a mile of creamy white sand beach," with cabanas and lounge chairs for the exclusive use of its residents.

But now this beach, once effectively private, can be used by anyone, as long as you drive or ride a bike to pick up your one-day pass at the entrance to the gated community. Walk-ins are not allowed. Neither are moonlit strolls; the public must vacate the premises by sundown.

There are other restrictions as well. There are only 23 parking stalls designated for public use — just 20 percent of the total available. The developers should expand that number if public demand warrants. The letter of the agreement should honor its spirit; access should be as easy and welcoming as possible.

Nonetheless, the agreement recognizes a crucial public right, and a cherished legacy. And a spectacular view.
