Even at 4 feet, 9 inches tall, McKinley High School sophomore Kylie Sato had big shoes to fill this basketball season: her sister's.
Chelsie Sato was a four-year starter and O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference Player of the Year last season.
But it turned out Kylie filled the shoes just fine, earning OIA White Conference Eastern Division Player of the Year honors after a recent vote of league coaches.
She started the regular season with a bang, scoring a game-high 17 points in a 44-42 victory over Kailua.
It would be the first of three close games between the Tigers and Surfriders.
Sato scored 18 points in the rematch, a 38-36 loss.
The third meeting was for the OIA White championship, and Sato scored 13 points, including a three-point play after a steal to tie it at 39-39 with 46 seconds remaining in overtime.
McKinley went on to win, 44-41.
Sato is joined on the OIA White East all-star first team by Tigers senior Pearly Togiai, Kailua senior Kristen Corrales, Castle senior Kori Berinobis and Kailua junior Ashley Jacobs.
Kailua's Ramona Takahashi was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Surfriders to a runner-up finish.
