Advertiser Staff

A grand jury has indicted a real estate agent on Maui for multiple tax violations.

According to the State Department of Taxation, Ginger Yiao was charged with five counts of failing to file her annual general excise returns for tax years 2000, 2001 and 2003 through 2005.

She has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

She was also charged with one count of attempt to evade or defeat tax, a class C felony punishable by a fine of not more than $100,000, a term of imprisonment of no more than five years or probation.

The evasion charge was for tax year 2003 in which Yiao claimed she was a resident of California and and had no taxable income in Hawai'i.

Yiao was arraigned on March 24. Her trial date is set for Sept. 8 in Maui Circuit Court.
