Filipino WWII vets remembered on PBS tonight

"Remember the Boys," a 30-minute documentary portrait of chaplain soldier Domingo Los Banos, who served in the U.S. Army's 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment, airs at 8:30 tonight on PBS Hawaii.

Stephanie Castillos' documentary raises memories of Hawaii's Filipino teenagers who went to war together during World War II.

Los Banos, their chaplain, has been working very hard to make sure we remember the boys. Now in his 80s, is among the last remaining teenage "Hawaii boys" from the time.

Born in Hawaii and a former Hawaii school superintendent, Domingo is the son of a Filipino immigrant. He and his siblings grew up on the pineapple plantations of Kauai. After the war, he became an educator and a chaplain to his buddies.

As his boys fall sick, it is Domingo who ministers to them and their families and who eulogizes them when they pass on. The film examines his inspiration to be a shepherd to his war buddies, in a tribute to the power of friendship.

"Remember the Boys" is Emmy-winnning documentary filmmaker Stephanie J. Castillo's sixth documentary project, and was an official selection of the Hawaii International Film Festival in 2005.
