Punahou leads girls state golf tournament on Kauai

Punahou freshman Alina Ching and Waiakea junior Britney Yada shot 2-under-par 70s for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the David Ishii Foundation/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Girls Golf Championship at Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.
Punahou shot a 220 (best three scores) to take a seven-stroke lead over Maui (227). Waiakea was third at 229, followed by Moanalua (240) and Mid-Pacific (243).
Moanalua's Kristina Merkle, a junior, shot a 71. Elyse Okada of Maui shot a 73. Defending state champion Anna Jang of Punahou shot a 74.
The final round is tomorrow.
The boys state tournament is next Tuesday and Wednesday at Wailua.
