The Hawaii Youth Symphony will give a rare free performance, at 7 p.m. May 21 at Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus, of works the musicians have been preparing with their coaches from the Honolulu Symphony.

The youth group is comprised of 26 students, from 11 schools, ranging in age from 14 to 17.

There are no tickets; doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The musicians have been mentored by Iggy Jang, concertmaster; Claire Sakai Hazzard, associate concertmaster; Paul Barrett, principal bassoon; Emma Philips, first violin; and Henry Miyamura, music director of the youth symphony.

Five ensembles bearing the mentors' names will perform: the Jang String Quartet, the Hazzard String Quartet, the Barrett Woodwind Quintet, the Philips String Sextet, and the Miyamura Septet.

The Miyamura septet, comprised of flute, oboe, clarinet, viola, bass, marimba and piano, will debut an original work by local composer and University of Hawaii student Michael Thomas Foumai, HYS '05.

Participation in this Chamber program, which is free to participants, requires that each ensemble not only prepare for two recital performances but also provide two community performances in facilities such as elderly care facilities, residences, community centers or hospitals.
