UH's Gauthier seventh in pole vault

University of Hawai'i's Patricia Gauthier set a school record in the pole vault yesterday during first-day events at the NCAA West Regional Track and Field Championships at Northridge, Calif.
Gauthier, a senior, had a personal-best vault of 13 feet, 3 3/4 inches, good for seventh place and two team points at the Matador Track Complex.
UH's Samantha Weaver finished 17th — clearing heights of 12-0 and 12-6 — and Jessica Custance tied for 21st, clearing 12-0.
Rainbow Wahine Alana Faagai and Brittani Daniels competed in the discus yesterday. Faagai placed 15th with a throw of 149 feet, 1 inch. Daniels didn't place because of a foul on her throw.
UH athletes competing today are Amber Kaufman and Emily Sheppard in the high jump, Annette Wichmann in the javelin and Meghan Weaver in the shot put.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
MID-PACIFIC'S FUJIKI HONORED BY GATORADE
Mid-Pacific's Aaron Fujiki was named the state's Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year.
The award recognizes athletic and academic achievement and character demonstrated on and off the field.
A senior catcher, Fujiki batted .381 with 23 RBIs, scored eight runs and hit three homers for the Mid-Pacific, which advanced to the state tournament. A B-average student, Fujiki has volunteered with the Special Olympics and with community-service projects as a member of the Mid-Pacific Holomua Honor Society. He also mentored in youth baseball clinics.
Fujiki will play baseball for San Diego State in the fall.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
HPU WOMEN SIGN GUARD FROM ARIZONA
The HPU women's basketball team continues its construction project with the signing of Arizona prepster Bethany Wong.
The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 10 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.3 steals per game last year for Sinagua High School in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The signing came a day after HPU received commitments from a trio of teammates from Cerritos Community College (Norwalk, Calif.)
Under first-year head coach Jeff Harada, the Sea Warriors finished 8-18 last season, a marked improvement over the 2006-07 season in which they finished 2-25.
GOLF
WEDNESDAY DEADLINE FOR USGA QUALIFIERS
Wednesday is the deadline to enter the USGA Girls and Boys Championships.
Both Hawai'i qualifiers will be at Wailea on Maui, with the boys playing 36 holes June 25 and 26, and the girls playing 18 on June 26.
Entry information and applications are available at www.usga.org/championships. For more information, contact USGA Junior Committee member Stephen Perry at sperry@hpa.edu.
Boys and girls who do not turn 18 until after July 26 are eligible. Boys must have a handicap index of 6.4 or less and girls must have an index of 18.4 or less.
The U.S. Girls Junior Championship will be July 21 to 26 at Hartford Golf Club in Connecticut. The U.S. Boys Championship is July 21 to 26 at Shoal Creek in Alabama.
