Ke Ala Makalae - Phase II, a coastal bike and pedestrian path on Kaua'i, was honored for its accessible design by the state Disability and Communications Access Board.

The Accessible Design Award program recognizes buildings, facilities and sites statewide that are not only accessible, but also aesthetically pleasing, functional and enhances the users' entire experience.

The award in the public design category was accepted by Kylan Dela Cruz, interim director of Kaua'i's Department of Parks & Recreation.

"We're pleased to receive this honor from the Disability and Communications Access Board," said Dela Cruz. "Accessibility to county facilities is very important. All of the stakeholders were brought to the table for this project to ensure that people with disabilities can enjoy the bike and pedestrian path like everyone else."

Other recipients of a 2008 Accessible Design Award include the state Department of Land and Natural Resources for ferry system improvements to the Manele Bay Small Boat Harbor on Lana'i, SSFM International Inc. for pedestrian accessibility improvements on the Big Island, and Space Options Inc. for Kulamalu Park on Maui.
