Patacchia third in Brazil surf

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu's North Shore tied for third place at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.
The final day of the four-day event was completed yesterday in 2- to 4-foot waves at Imbituba, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Patacchia won his fourth-round and quarterfinal heats, but then lost in the semifinals to Australia's Bede Durbidge.
"I was trying to get the best waves but it didn't work out," Patacchia said. "Bede surfed a smart heat and got the best waves."
Durbidge went on to win the contest, defeating France's Jeremy Flores in the final.
Patacchia received $12,000 for third place. He also moved up to No. 11 on the 2008 World Championship Tour ratings.
The final event on the 2008 tour will be the Billabong Pipeline Masters, which is scheduled for Dec. 8 to 20 at the Banzai Pipeline on O'ahu.
XCEL PRO STILL ON HOLD
The final day of the Xcel Pro men's surfing contest is still waiting for sufficient waves to arrive at Sunset Beach.

UH BEATS IDAHO
An own goal boosted the University of Hawai'i soccer team to a 2-1 win over Idaho yesterday in the Western Athletic Conference finale for both teams in Moscow, Idaho.
Hawai'i (8-6-4, 4-2-1 WAC) finished the season on a three-game winning streak and secured the third seed for this week's WAC Tournament.
The Rainbow Wahine rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Freshman Colleen Burns scored her first career goal off an assist from junior forward Ambree Ako at the 51-minute mark to tie match at 1
Three minutes later, Hawai'i went ahead 2-1 on an own goal when Idaho tried to clear the ball, but it deflected into the goal.
Hawai'i senior goalkeeper Kori Lu finished with six saves.
Ashley Perez scored for Idaho (1-16-2, 0-6-1).
The WAC Tournament starts on Thursday in Reno, Nev.
SAILING
UH FINISHES FOURTH
The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team placed fourth at the PCCSC Sloop Championships yesterday in Newport Harbor, Calif.
USC scored a low-best 17 points to win the six-team event and earn a berth to the ISCA National Sloop Championships later this month.
UH, with Samuel Kahn as skipper, and Andrew Meade and Ryan Wild as crew, scored 24 points.
TENNIS
WEBER ADVANCES
University of Hawai'i junior Andreas Weber defeated UH sophomore Craig Faulk, 6-3, 6-3, yesterday to advance to the final round in qualifying for the main draw of the Waikoloa Futures USTA Pro Circuit Tournament on the Big Island.
Also yesterday, Johannes Robert Van Overbeek defeated UH senior Sascha Heinemann, 6-4, 7-6 (9), and Treat Conrad Huey beat UH freshman Chad Rubin by walkover.
Qualifying continues today with eight advancing to the 64-player main draw, which starts play tomorrow.
