Homers help BeachBoys top Honu

James McOwen, Tony Thomas Jr. and Roger Kieschnick hit solo home runs as Waikiki held off North Shore, 8-6, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Thomas batted 3 for 5 to lead a 13-hit attack for the BeachBoys (16-12), who led 7-0 through four innings.

Jason Castro had three hits and Kyle Martin drove in two runs for the Honu (12-16).

Earlier, the West Oahu took advantage of 14 walks to rout Honolulu, 13-5.

Caleb Gindl and Mark Hallberg each had two hits and three RBIs, and Chris Hatcher hit a three-run double for the CaneFires (14-14).

Kala Ka'aihue drove in four runs, two on his fourth home run of the winter season, to lead the Sharks (14-14).

West Oahu starter Cody Scarpette benefitted from an early 8-2 lead to earn the victory after working four innings and allowing two runs and three hits while striking out five.


SURFING

GILMORE TRIUMPHS

Australia's Stephanie Gilmore won the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru women's surfing contest yesterday.

The final day of the contest was run in 3- to 4-foot waves at Piscina, Peru.

Gilmore won three heats yesterday, including a victory over Brazil's Silvana Lima in the final.

Gilmore, who won the women's world championship last year, took over the No. 1 spot on the 2008 ASP Women's World Tour ratings with yesterday's victory. Through six of eight events on the 2008 tour, Gilmore has 5,148 points.

Sofia Mulanovich of Peru is No. 2 with 4,963. Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels — who did not enter the Peru contest — is the top Hawai'i surfer at No. 10. Waialua's Megan Abubo is No. 14.

The final two events of the women's tour will be staged in Hawai'i — the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach (Nov. 24 to Dec. 6) and the Billabong Pro Maui at Ho-nolua Bay, Maui (Dec. 8 to 20).


GOLF

WARRIORS IN 12TH

The University of Hawai'i men's team shot a second-round 288 yesterday and was in 12th place in the 14-team Kaua'i Intercollegiate Invitational at the Puakea Golf Course in Lihu'e.

San Diego, with Punahou alum Alex Ching (69—138, tie for seventh), shot 267—553 for a nine-stroke lead over Drake.

San Jose State's Jay Myers shot an 8-under 64 for a 134 total and a one-stroke lead. Thomas Kua is UH's top scorer with 70—141 for a tie for 16th.


TENNIS

'BOWS FALL IN DOUBLES

University of Hawai'i sophomore Dennis Lajola and freshman Leo Rosenberg lost to Chase Buchanan and Ty Trombetta, 6-3, 6-4, yesterday in the first round of doubles at the Waikoloa Futures USTA Pro Circuit Tournament on the Big Island.

Punahou alum Ikaika Jobe and Sydney Jim lost to Andrey Kumantsov and Tigran Martirosyan, 6-2, 7-5.
