The rain-delayed HSBC Champions tournament will finish tomorrow in Shanghai, China, which is just fine with Australian Geoff Ogilvy.
Ogilvy's 7-under 65 in yesterday's second round — the best of the day — put him a stroke behind co-leaders Sergio Garcia (68) and Henrik Stenson (69).
Ogilvy should have shared the lead. After a 12-foot chip-in for birdie on 15, he had a 3-foot putt for another on 16 to reach 10-under — but it lipped out. That stopped his momentum, with pars on the final two holes.
Ogilvy's only win this season came on a Monday in Miami at the CA Championship, a World Golf Championships event.
"If you're still playing and in contention, then playing on a Monday — it's no big deal," said Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champion.
Englishman Oliver Wilson (68) was also a shot behind the leaders at 135. Defending champion Phil Mickelson (70) and Graeme McDowell (65) of Northern Ireland were two shots back at 136.
Garcia and Stenson each holed putts on 18 to reach 10-under 134. The first-round leader, Stenson rolled in a 20-foot putt. Playing in the same group, Garcia tapped-in a 2-footer for his birdie.
ISHII FINISHES SECOND
Hawai'i's David Ishii fired an 8-under-par 64 in the second round of the Fubon Senior Open and ended up second when the final round was washed out this weekend in Taipei, Taiwan.
Ishii opened with an even-par 72, then put together seven birdies, an eagle and a bogey in the second round for his best score in some five years.
The low round left him one shot out of first. He was not able to finish the first hole in the final round before rain drenched the course. The tournament was canceled three hours later.
TWO TIED IN TOUR FINALE
Steve Marino shot a 6-under-par 66 yesterday to tie Scott Verplank for the lead heading into the final round of the PGA Tour's $4.6 million Children's Miracle Network Classic at Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The second-year PGA tour member will play with Verplank (69) and Davis Love III (64), two players with Ryder Cup experience, PGA wins and who were in each other's wedding, in today's final threesome. Verplank and Marino are tied at 19-under 197 after three rounds.
"Those guys are legendary for me. I watched them growing up," said Marino, seeking his first tour win in 65 starts. "They won't intimidate me, make me nervous."
SHIN LEADS IN JAPAN
Shin Ji-yai showed up at chilly and wet Kinetsu Kashikojima with some warm clothes and a sizzling iron game.
Making her fifth start of the year in Japan, the young South Korean star shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead in the Mizuno Classic at Shima, Japan. She had a 10-under 134 total with a round left in the event sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and Japan LPGA.
MOLDER MAKES A RUN
Bryce Molder closed in on a PGA Tour card yesterday, shooting a 7-under 64 for a share of the third-round lead in the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship at McKinney, Texas.
Molder needs to finish in the final top 25 in the earnings race to earn a 2009 PGA Tour card.
