Shaw helps Sharks beat BeachBoys

Scott Shaw teamed with three relievers on a six-hitter as Honolulu beat Waikiki, 4-1, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Les Murakami Stadium.

Shaw pitched five scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out six and walking two.

Honolulu (15-15) scored three runs in the sixth, snapping a 23-inning scoreless streak that spanned three games, to take a 3-0 lead.

The BeachBoys (17-14) closed to 3-1 in the eighth when Austin Romine doubled with two outs and scored on Yonder Alonso's single.

Elsewhere, Cyle Hankerd had four hits, including two homers, and drove in five runs as West Oahu routed North Shore, 13-3, at Hans L'Orange Park.

Kyle Peter also homered and drove in three runs for the CaneFires (16-14), who moved out of reach with an eight-run second inning that made it 11-0.

Matt McBride had two hits for the Honu (13-18).


VOLLEYBALL

HILO SWEEPS BYUH

Josimara Pinheiro had 14 kills and eight digs as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated host Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 25-11, 25-18, 25-21, last night in a Pacific West Conference match in La'ie.

Fabiane Seben added eight kills for the Vulcans, who finished 21-7 overall and 10-4 in the PacWest.

Agnes Tuilevuka, Losaline Faka'osi, and Ane Vea each had six kills for the Seasiders (16-7, 12-2), who had already clinched the PacWest title and will play in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament later this month.

HPU SWEEPS CU

Kelly Balanay had 17 kills as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 25-16, 25-14, 25-16, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

Antje Buskies added 11 kills, Julia Gruszecka had 10 kills and Tricia Yoshimura contributed 18 digs for HPU (12-13, 8-6).

Trina Kauliakamoa had nine kills, and Samantha Miller and Courtney Lorusso each added seven for Chaminade (10-15, 4-10).


SOFTBALL

UH WINS, 18-0 AND 15-0

Tanisha Milca had four hits, Melissa Gonzalez drove in five runs and Stacey Yamada hit a three-run homer as the host University of Hawai'i White Team beat Chaminade, 18-0, yesterday in the final scrimmage game of the Kama'aina Classic.

Earlier, Courtney Baughman and Stephanie Ricketts teamed on a no-hitter as the UH Black Team beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 15-0.

Also, BYUH beat Chaminade, 7-2.


BASKETBALL

HPU TAKES TWO

Rishi Kakad had 15 points, and Misha Radojevic added 12 points and 15 rebounds as Hawai'i Pacific beat the New Zealand Saints, 91-55, last night in an exhibition game at Mid-Pacific Institute gym.

Jordan Mills led the Saints with 17 points.

In a women's exhibition game, Mana Hopkins scored 20 points and Maltresa Neely added 14 as HPU beat Tianjin University (China), 68-50.


SWIMMING

STRONG EFFORTS BY UH

The University of Hawai'i men's swimming team won six dual meets over two days of the Anteater Shootout hosted by UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif.

The 'Bows beat Air Force, Cal Poly and UC Irvine on Friday, and Air Force, BYU and UNLV yesterday.

The UH women's also beat three teams on Friday to advance to the main pool, where it beat Pepperdine yesterday.

UH INDIVIDUAL EVENT WINNERS

Mark Higley (200 free), Nicola Xella (100 and 200 breast), Paul Birich (200 fly), Davis Kane (50 and 100 free), Lazar Bogdanovski (200 back), Greg Wilson (100 fly), Douglas Cohen (3-meter diving) and Raquel Bartlow (1- and 3-meter diving).
