Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Salomon Torres retired from Major League Baseball after a 28-save season, ending his career to focus on family and religion.

Torres, 36, played 12 major-league seasons, making stops in San Francisco, Seattle, Montreal and Pittsburgh. He has a 44-58 career record with a 4.31 earned run average and 57 saves. His 28 last season led the Brewers, who reached the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

"While I still have a great passion and energy for the game of baseball, I feel that the time has come to redirect that passion and energy to my family and God," Torres said in a statement on the team's Web site.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Kenny Rogers was the only player to file for free agency today, according to a Major League Baseball Players Association news release.

Rogers, who turned 44 yesterday, was 9-13 with a 5.70 ERA last season, his 20th in the major leagues.

Baseball players have until Nov. 13 to declare free agency, which allows them to negotiate with any of the sport's 30 teams.
