Sumo: Grand champion Hakuho survives Day 4 scare

Associated Press

FUKUOKA, Japan — Grand champion Hakuho of Mongolia survived a scare on Wednesday to stay one win off the lead at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

In the day's final bout at Fukuoka Kokusai Center, Hakuho was pushed back to the edge of the ring by No. 2 maegashira Wakanosato. Both wrestlers fell out simultaneously but the ringside judges determined that Wakanosato touched down first.

Hakuho and Wakanostato both stand at 3-1, trailing lower-ranked wrestlers Dejima, Tokitenku and Miyabiyama, who all won to improve to 4-0.

Hakuho's main rival yokozuna Asashoryu of Mongolia is sitting out the tournament with an elbow injury.

Bulgarian Kotooshu continues to struggle and was forced out by top maegashira Toyonoshima, who got both arms around the ozeki before shoving him out to improve to 3-1. Kotooshu dropped to 1-3.

Ama's bid for promotion to ozeki took another hit when the Mongolian sekiwake was swatted down by Goeido to drop to 2-2. Komusubi Goeido picked up his first win against three losses.

Earlier Wednesday, local favorite ozeki Kaio pulled out of the 15-day tournament after hurting his arm in Tuesday's loss to Wakanosato.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai shoved out third-ranked maegashira Hokutoriki (1-3) to even his record at 2-2.

In other major bouts, ozeki Kotomitsuki overpowered winless top maegashira Futeno to improve to 3-1.
